Papers, Please is an excellent little indie, with the "dystopian document thriller" a powerful example of how strong writing can make for an experience that punches well above its weight. Created by Lucas Pope (Return of the Obra Dinn), the wonderful game just celebrated its 10th anniversary, announcing that more than five million copies have been sold since.
In Papers, Please, you play an immigration officer on the border of a fictional communist state called Arstotzka, tasked with sorting out legitimate visitors and potential enemies of the state. With a family to feed, however, bribes become more attractive, and you may find yourself eventually sympathising with those made criminal by circumstance.
Pope announced the news on X, slashing prices to just $1.99 across all platforms and even dropped a fun demake of the game, which you can play for yourself.
