Bethesda: Maintains multiplayer (and makes it cross-play). Adds a brand-new campaign. Enhances the original game. Adds Quake II 64 (because, why not?). Charges $10.

Rockstar/Take-Two: Omits multiplayer. Changes nothing about the original game. Charges $50 and says it's a "commercially accurate price"

Damn, thought I would be the first to say something about commercially accurate pricing.

Look at that, a remaster of a game that has functioning online modes, 4k, cross play, motion controls and it's only 10 bucks. If only Rock Star had a team that was that respectful

Does it support 120fps like Quake 1? Q1 had all the bells and whistles, but i found it a little too depressing and bleak for my tastes, plus it didn't always run smoothly. Frame rate skips and hiccups would rear their head every now and then which is baffling when you take into account how ancient it looks. The Gyro aiming was a 10/10 though, just as it is in Power Slave.

I would agree that read dead redemption seems overpriced.

But just by play time the price can be justified. According to howlongtobeat:

(apparently a completionist playing quake 2 is more skilled than the average quake 2 player ... ). So, a completionist has 4.9 times longer fun with RDR than with Quake 2 , ignoring the infinite fun people may have with the multiplayer ...

Moreover quake runs on everything including your pocket calculator where RDR was only released on "exotic" hardware x360 and ps3. So, I am pretty sure that the port was much more work than the port of quake2.

Bethesda's ports of Doom were very good as well. And they are like, 2 or 3 quid each?

Quake II was and still is one of the best shooters imho

@gaston except Quake 2 isn't a port. It is a remaster with many MANY added features. RDR has fewer features than the original game. So minus features.

@gaston The idea of hours being equivalent to worth is absolute utter bollocks. You can put thousands of hours into roguelike games so does that make them worth 100 times the price of Ratchet and Clank? It’s not like movies charge more for how long they are either, good luck going to the pictures to see Shoah if you really want your money’s worth.

Still need to go through 1 but intending to do it co-op with a friend after Prodeus.

I know it's not the PSone port that's been remastered, but dang that version was super impressive for the hardware.

No other game has ever managed to make you simultaneously headbang while maintaining solid aim quite like Quake II.

For anyone who continues to bash Rockstar:

• they are conforming to us purists and releasing the original experience but for new consoles
• they even left the original retail price as it was year 2010

@Nades It does which I'm surprised at as there are relatively few trophies. Seems quite an easy platinum...famous last words.

The comparison to Rockstar's RDR1 is between a 1997 game and a 2010 game to be fair. But I don't want it to seem like im defending the $50 price, that is outrageous. $20-30 would have gone down better.

@CaptD Yeah, I just saw. Kinda strange how small and seemingly easy the Plat is considering Quake 1 remaster was somewhat of a challenge, maybe they were running out of time or something.

What an odd reason when Game Pass isn’t a requirement for any game on Xbox. Sure, Game Pass Core will be the new Live Gold for multiplayer, but you can still buy games if you want.

I mean, it’s one thing to say you don’t like the Xbox ecosystem, the hardware/controller, game selection, or you just don’t like Microsoft for business decisions, but to just ignore the games because of something that isn’t even true seems odd.

And if you do think Game Pass is required, I suggest you find a new place for facts regarding Xbox.

And if it would've the enhancements of the xbox backward compat version as well. Did they state which version they'll port? Wasn't the PS3 version inferior to the 360 version in the first place (I think less foliage i.e.).

Anyway back2topic. Q2 was an instabuy, I'll basically support all Nightdive releases. Hope Rise of the Triad:Ludicrous Edition and System Shock will get their console releases as well soon. Looking forward to all the new Q2 content in the meantime =]

Also PC users that own Quake 2 in their Steam library get the Remaster for free! Just like the original Quake.

@Dadou ABK still owns publishing rights for that one, still not under MS.

@MaikonCSGarcia Id Software retained the copyright for Quake 4 despite Activision's publishing. And there were later re-releases on Steam (2011) and GOG (2017) that were published by Bethesda. So it's definitely possible.

@gaston not for that price buddy! Quake 2 is a remaster for £7.99 and rdr is daylight robbery. Rockstar have shown zero respect for their own franchise let alone the dedicated fans crying out for a proper remake.

But it also does not make any sense to compare the effort of porting a game that was already ported to many platforms to a port of a much more complicated game that was only released on some more or less exotic platforms.

@Cashews Still the effort of the quake 2 remaster and the RDR port are very likely not the same and the RDR port was likely much more tedious (There are all kinds of ports of quake 2. For example nvidia made a version with raytracing in 2019).
I am not defending T2's price and I am not interested at that price. But I would say the same for a game from 1997 at 8 quids (despite the upgrade to 4k etc. it still looks very much like a 20 year old game. In comparison RDR looks like a 10 year old game — and a very good looking one).

@Northern_munkey T2 enabled the port to "modern" platforms. I would not call this "not showing any respect". Personally I neither see enough value in the quake 2 remaster at 8 quids, nor in the RDR port. Though, quake 2 can be played on many platforms, where RDR could only be played on XB360, ms' xb360 emulator and ps3. In that sense there might be more value in the RDR port.

@gaston they could have really done something special with rdr though. Quake 2 could have been enhanced further but its only £8. Red dead is a port and a very lazy cash in no matter how you try and reason it. If the price was a lot lower (£15) then maybe i'd be more reasonable but its not and the fact its no different to the original release is a slap in the face to those who have been hoping for a remake or at least a considerable upgrade. Releasing this at this price just shows that rockstar think that their fans will buy any old crap for any price and that is disrespectful buddy.
