The year is 2023, and niche mecha series Armored Core is being advertised on the side of buses in the UK. Indeed, as reposted by Bandai Namco Europe on Twitter, the upcoming action title is getting a marketing push that would make most AAA releases blush — and it's just crazy to see.
If you're anything like us, you'll remember a time when Armored Core was some slightly strange, super hardcore PS2 robot thing, typically found on the pre-owned shelves of your local GAME, being sold for just a few quid. For the record, we bought and played several of them — and enjoyed ourselves! — but we would have never in a million years anticipated Armored Core's meteoric rise to fame.
Of course, the franchise is leapfrogging off the back of giants — it didn't get to this point by itself. Developer FromSoftware has enjoyed its own ascent, with its Souls games — most recently Elden Ring — catapulting it to the highest echelons of the industry. Seemingly all Armored Core 6 needed was the FromSoftware name attached to it.
Anyway, we're still struggling to wrap our heads around this madness. Did you ever expect to see a series like Armored Core be advertised like this? Remember to conserve your ammo in the comments section below.

This is my next big one, then Starfield, Cyberpunk DLC and finishing the year off with Spider-Man
Bandai’s got all those Elden Ring bucks laying around to spend.
It looks good but let's see if people actually buy it before we say the franchise is famous.
@kyleforrester87 You ever been on the side of a bus, Kyle?
@ShogunRok nearly been under one once, I was choking on a Big Mac and fell into the gutter coughing it up. I should have known better really, fast food is bad for you.
So if the bus crashes, will it do more damage to what it crashes into than itself?
@BeerIsAwesome Of course it will mate, it's a bus. Whatever it hits will be flatter than the Earth at a conspiracy theory convention.
Feels like this game isn’t being talked about enough. Everyone is raving about Baldur’s Gate but here I am so much more excited for Armored Core. I’m all about gameplay
They obviously do this for the news articles - not for the bus ad.
They do one bus. Always in London, always a double decker. The bus service probably has one bus dedicated for this type of advert ploy. The bloggers fall for it (every time) and print the ads they don't get paid for.
It is a cost effective strategy.
Wonder how many "new gen" from soft fans will buy this thinking it´s a souls like.
My only pending game this year. Never played one of these, but the gameplay and footage so far looks great, and of course I have a lot of faith coming from FromSoftware
@jdv95 I'd guess roughly around zero people. They will see a mech and not associate the two.
@BraveLilCrumpet This is a fair point!
@jdv95 @Cashews Just don't tell them that Fromsoft also made one of the easiest platinum trophies you can honestly earn on the PS4, by making Deracine for PSVR. Obligatory RIP Japan Studio, who were also involved in making that game.
Hmm, that bus doesn’t look hardy enough to take on any mech!
Cool. From software name has to do with it.but armored core 6 fires of rubicon looks really goid.word up son
Now that's damn kool 😎
Not surprised at all lots of bus companies, TFL are short of cash but are not taking adverts from junk food or anything else they deem "unsuitable"
This leaves a gap where ad space is going spare and suspect quite cheap to anybody who has a decent enough budget.
It wasn't that long ago TFL took Sony money for the underground signs in Oxford circus for Circle, square, triangle and Cross.
I suspect that there's going to be not only bus ads but on the tube escalators as well as when I last went to ser ABBA in February the tube ads in zone 1 were missing and had only a few ads for shows.
